WordPress 2.0

December 28th, 2005 No comments

I upgraded to WordPress 2.0 today using the instructions at http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress. The upgrade was straightforward and easy. No problems to report.

I was using Spam Karma 2 Reloaded before but am trying out the Akismet spam service. This requires a wordpress.com API key. The key comes with a account but I wish I could have gotten one without signing up for an account I will never use. O well.

Amazon.com order arrived!

December 24th, 2005 No comments

The mail came today, and what showed up? That’s right, my Amazon.com order! I am one happy person. DHL must have found it and was able to get it down to get in today’s mail. This beats having to wait until Tuesday for a status.

Christmas Grinch

December 24th, 2005 No comments

I ordered a couple books from Amazon.com (the ARRL books for the General and Amateur Extra exams) on the 13th and they shipped the 21st after a delaed shipping notice. It went out 2nd day DHL and I was supposed to have it on the 23rd. I tracked it yesterday afternoon after falling asleep for a couple hours and noticed it was DELIVERED (at 7:06am it arrived in Lisle, IL and and 9:41am was DELIVERED to the same location! It was now 4pm. I had no package, there was no “missed delivery” notice on my front door, I don’t live in Lisle, and it was signed for by someone I never heard of.

So I call DHL and they told me they had to look into it and get back to me. Well this is fine and dandy, it was already 455pm and I had to work at 10p so I kindly let them know I was supposed to be sleeping and if they could get any info now. They did and after several minutes on hold said my package was apparently accidentally grouped with a bunch of other Amazon.com orders and yada yada yada. I was told they still need time to look into it and would call me back. I said that’s fine, just leave a message since I’m going to be sleeping.

Well I got up for work , DHL had called, and their message said they are trying to recover the package from the post office. (I know DHL is a big USPS partner, I usually get Amazon orders from the postman.)

I’m not sure what this really means. Are they trying to recover it so they can personally deliver it? Or get it back to properly get it to me via the local post office? Who knows.

How can this get better? Because of the holiday weekend DHL is closed Monday! That’s right Tuesday will be the earliest I get a status of any kind and a possibly delivered package.

I’m just glad this was a couple books for me and not a Christmas present for niece or nephew although I was looking forward to reading them this weekend. At least I still have the www.hamtestonline.com site to use. I still wanted to have the books for hard copy reference.

This was the free shipping offer from Amazon too so I can’t be to mad I paid for this error on their end. I am curious though what you get when they fail to make their guaranteed delivery time. I’ll find out when I call Tuesday.

Early Birthday Present

December 14th, 2005 No comments

I checked my grades for this semester online a few times throughout the day and they weren’t in yet. I just checked now and they were in. What a pleasant surprise to see an “A” was transcripted in Power Supplies. I don’t know how but I’m not going to question it. I was seriously thinking it was going to be a “B”. I’ll count this as an early birthday present as it’s tomorrow!

AdSense Account approved

December 9th, 2005 No comments

That was certainly fast, I applied at 3:50p (and confirmed the link in the email) and at 4:25p I just received the approval email. I need to get a nap before work at 10pm tonight though, I’ve been up since 7am Thursday morning! 4 hours won’t be much but it’ll be enough for a quick refresher.

I decided to apply for Google Adsense to check it out. I’ll know in 1-2 days if I am approved.

no mo-bloggin’

December 8th, 2005 No comments

I tried to setup fmoblog but it requires the imap_open PHP function. I sent a little support inquiry and was told it’s not enabled for security reasons. Boo. Anyone know of a good moblogging plugin that doesn’t require imap_open?

Almost done!

December 8th, 2005 No comments

Well this semester flew by. I took exam 2 this past Tuesday in Electrical Power Supplies. It was another doozy with this teacher. I set my expectations really really low so I would get better then what I expeceted. I got the exam back today and got an 85% (with 26 points taken off). I must say this teacher has killer exams but is extremely fair with curving. I was going to be content with a 70-75% (with the unknown curve). Out of the 6 students there was 1 A, 2B’s, and 2C’s and one student is taking the exam right now since they weren’t here Tuesday.

The final exam is Tuesday December 13th at 7:45am. It’s 50 question multiple choice. The exams have been free form answer. I asked the teacher just where I’m sitting now. Going into the final exam I am guaranteed a B in this class. If I get the bare minimum to pass (the exam), a 60% (graded, with curve), I’ll end up with a 80.7% B. If I ace the exam I’ll end up with a 88.7% B. If I manage to pull this off the instructor said if he feels I know the material he’ll bump it to an A. Otherwise if I get the average test of 80% then I’ll end up with a 84.7% B. So in the end it looks like a B is a lock in this class which is plenty fine with me. It will be my only B since coming back to school after the layoff but a B is still fine with me.

Now I just have to make my allowed sheet for the exam and wait until 7:45 am this Tuesday. At least I can rest easy knowing a B will be mine. I know I won’t ace it and get a perfect so a A bump isn’t going to happen.

I also asked him about the independant study (where I got my Amateur Radio License) and was told that’s an A. That will put my semseter at a 3.50GPA. I haven’t bothered to calculate the full GPA.
