I decided to apply for Google Adsense to check it out. I’ll know in 1-2 days if I am approved.

no mo-bloggin’

December 8th, 2005 No comments

I tried to setup fmoblog but it requires the imap_open PHP function. I sent a little support inquiry and was told it’s not enabled for security reasons. Boo. Anyone know of a good moblogging plugin that doesn’t require imap_open?

Almost done!

December 8th, 2005 No comments

Well this semester flew by. I took exam 2 this past Tuesday in Electrical Power Supplies. It was another doozy with this teacher. I set my expectations really really low so I would get better then what I expeceted. I got the exam back today and got an 85% (with 26 points taken off). I must say this teacher has killer exams but is extremely fair with curving. I was going to be content with a 70-75% (with the unknown curve). Out of the 6 students there was 1 A, 2B’s, and 2C’s and one student is taking the exam right now since they weren’t here Tuesday.

The final exam is Tuesday December 13th at 7:45am. It’s 50 question multiple choice. The exams have been free form answer. I asked the teacher just where I’m sitting now. Going into the final exam I am guaranteed a B in this class. If I get the bare minimum to pass (the exam), a 60% (graded, with curve), I’ll end up with a 80.7% B. If I ace the exam I’ll end up with a 88.7% B. If I manage to pull this off the instructor said if he feels I know the material he’ll bump it to an A. Otherwise if I get the average test of 80% then I’ll end up with a 84.7% B. So in the end it looks like a B is a lock in this class which is plenty fine with me. It will be my only B since coming back to school after the layoff but a B is still fine with me.

Now I just have to make my allowed sheet for the exam and wait until 7:45 am this Tuesday. At least I can rest easy knowing a B will be mine. I know I won’t ace it and get a perfect so a A bump isn’t going to happen.

I also asked him about the independant study (where I got my Amateur Radio License) and was told that’s an A. That will put my semseter at a 3.50GPA. I haven’t bothered to calculate the full GPA.

Dreamhost Rocks

Dreamhost really is, um, a dream. Great service and absolutely no complaints. Importing my old databse was a breeze. Plenty of other options. I really like the fact that with the lowest plan my bandwidth increases by 1GB a week and my storage increases 40MB a week. I’m no where near using the initial 4.8GB I received and as of today I’m up to 5160MB of storage and 129GB of bandwidth. I can sincerely recommend them.

Computers are fun

December 7th, 2005 No comments

Well my computer was dying the last few days. Out of nowhere it would just shutdown (especially if compiling a new package and the cpu was running 99% load) but the power light was still on. I had to hold the power button in a few seconds for it to ‘really’ shut off. Then after turning it back on the HDD’s sounded funny spinning up and would take a few hard power off and ons to get back up. Then only to shutdown again. I replaced the power supply yesterday as well as added some new case fans and all is well again. I figured the PSU might be the problem because of the sound the HDDs made spinning up, sounded weak and like it wasn’t getting proper power.

At least it was something simple and not a dying CPU.

Site move

Whilst I make my final decision on my first Ham Radio I have decided on hosting. The winner is Dreamhost. They give quite a bit and with the 80% off deal, on 2 years I’m paying 4.77 a month (for 24 months). All that’s left to do is setup the pastebin. Otherwise everything else should be ok.

First Amateur Radio

November 23rd, 2005 No comments

I have no idea where to begin with my first radio. It will be a dual or tri-band handheld transceiver since a desktop unit is not possible right now (due to outdoor antenna requirements). If any fellow ham’s see this and can recommend a nice starter HT it would be greatly appreciated.

I managed to FAX the receipt to Samsung today and have yet to hear from them. The phone rep said she’d call upon it’s receipt. O well, at least it’s been working OK sicne I left it since yesterday. I expect it to go out again, but at least it will work again after a few hours.

Damn TV

November 21st, 2005 No comments

Well after having my TV repaired it just did the same thing it did last month. Picture/sound goes out and clicks trying to turn it on. If I leave it unplugged for a while (few hours, overnight best) it will work again for an unknown length of time. That’s how it was the first time this happened.

I called Samsung and they tell me my warrantly expired in October! I asked how that’s possible since I just bought it. Apparently they didn’t have a bill of sale and went a year from the date of manufacture. They never asked for one before, plus I gave the repair guy a copy of the receipt. I need to fax it to them to setup repair this time. I won’t be able to do this until probably Wednesday.

At least it’s covered. I just wonder what was really done the first time since I never received ANY paperwork. Only paperwork was me giving the repairman a copy of the receipt. Samsung’s system was down so they couldn’t tell me in detail. Now I will say the repair man was honest. I’m not saying this was shady. Plus he came from Chicago which is over 40 miles north.
